Cabeza de Vaca: el encuentro intercultural

Resumen
En el ensayo se analiza la interpretación que hace la película Cabeza de Vaca del encuentro entre las culturas y la consecuente transformación de la identidad de quienes participaron en esta experiencia, tema central de Los naufragios, un texto del siglo XVI en que la película se inspiró. Lo anterior permite encontrar de qué manera se ha actualizado el sentido de dicho suceso en la cinta. Se argumenta que la transformación del significado del encuentro intercultural tiene importantes implicaciones ideológicas, que distancian la película de Echevarría de la tradición radical y militante del nuevo cine latinoamericano, aunque por otra parte la obra continúa sus búsquedas estéticas y narrativas.
Abstract
This essay analyzes the interpretation offered by the motion picture Cabeza de Vaca of the encounter between cultures and consequent transformation of the identities of the participants in that experience, which is a central theme in Los naufragios, a 16thcentury text on which the film was based. This enables the way in which the film has updated the sense of that event to be identified. It is argued that the transformation of the intercultural encounters meaning has major ideological implications, which distance Echevarrías film from the radical and militant tradition of new Latin American cinema, although the work still follows its esthetic and narrative lines.
